An engine can only run if air goes in and out. If you stop it from coming
out by putting your hand over the tailpipe it has to stop if there are no
leaks in the exhaust. Probably the reason it is so easy to kill is that it
is not running well, therefore can't overcome the resistance of your hand
over the tailpipe.
