James----In reviewing what has happened to cause the oil pressure to
rise, what you already knew seems to be the answer.
a. The engine was rebuilt
b. A new oil pump was installed
c. The weather is now colder than perhaps when a & b were first done
100 lb. of pressure is about right when running a 'cold' engine at rpm's
over 2500, as when going thru the gears. Even here in L.A. I can see
high numbers like this, so I shift gears to reduce pump revs. By the
time the temp gauge gets to the 1/4 mark this pressure comes down to
about 80 lb. and eventually down to 70lb. with the engine fully warmed
and at road speed.
It's not likely anything has happened to the oil bi-pass spring, but you
can take it out to be sure nothing has found its way between the spring
coils that might add
force to them. You can even replace it with a lighter spring to reduce
the pressure required to open the bi-pass. I'd wouldn't. Just let the
engine warm up a bit,shift sooner, and wait for the change we know is
coming with the seasons.
