Don--Others beat me with their explanation. You have to think about this
one on a microscopic scale. I bet you could use wheel bearing grease and
accomplish the same objective: keeping the contact surfaces free of
oxidation. And the word "dielectric" would never come up.
I think dielectric grease was originally intended for spark plug connections
to prevent stray voltage leakage.

non-conductor. So we clean up the connection surfaces and then coat them
with a non-conductive
material? Doesn't sound right to me.
