Tim,

The old chrome, nickel, & copper should be removed. This is done by the 
platers. Surface preparation is a must! Copper is applied and buffed. A good 
buffer person can make or break the finished product. If he doesn't buff 
enough you will have pits,
if he buffs too much he can wipe away fine details of the piece. Then when 
the part is smooth it gets a nickel coat and buff. Then a chrome dip & buff. 
Chrome only protects the nickel plating from oxidizing. The nickel is what 
makes the part shine.
Find someone good over there is my recommendation!
