The best trick I've seen is to take a short, heavy hammer, and with the nut 
very loose (1/4" space from nut to lower arm) whack the lower control arm 
repeatedly with the hammer.  This deforms the tapered hole enough for the 
tapered ball joint to come out, but not damage the arm, since it's a 
malleable casting.  Sometimes takes 6 good hard whacks.
