I guess you didn't read the last sentence of my 
message.  I could hear the alarm on my cars from inside 
my apartment when I lived in one, and can hear it at 
work also.  There are alarms with pagers that work for 
several miles, and the sensitivity can be set to keep 
alarms from false triggering.(also in my post)  If 
someone wanted the stereo or to steal the car it would 
have been gone a long time ago.  You are correct that 
alarms do not prevent theft.  They do promote stealing 
your neighbors car that has no alarm instead.
