The diff and the ring and pinion are different parts. You can put a 3.90
ring and pinion onto a limited slip diff. I currently have one with 4.38
gears and am looking for a 4.11 instead. The 3.90s are readily available
used as are the 4.38's. If you want to find out what 4.38's are like on the
highway, just leave it in 4th gear (assuming you've got a 5 spd). The
overall ratio with 4.38's in 5th gear is 3.72 - almost exactly the same as a
stock 2000 in 4th.

Was there a 3.9 LSD? (1600 is 3.9) Would that be a good compromise?
