Andrew,

As I understand it the geometry of the ring and pinion has to be quite
accurate and each ring/pinion/carrier is slightly different. Iven if you
just change the bearings on the pinion you generally need to reshim
things, so changing to a different set of gears will probably throw things
off even farther. I had to shim one ring/pinion set years ago and it took
a fair amount of patience and trial and error, but it is not rocket
science, just time consuming. You also need to purchase more shims than
you need so you will have what you need on hand when you start!
