RE: speedometer

Could be the sheath in which the cable turns that is kinked/broken/frayed. 
Had that happen on my E-Type - the speedo bounced 20 mph all the time. 
Looked at the sheath and found it was coming apart.  Put ned cable/sheath
on and no more problem.

Worth a look-see.
