These are all very interesting points and ideas.  But I believe that it 
comes down to what the driver(owner) wants in his car, whether it takes away 
from the "character" or not.   Maybe the owner wants the character of a 5 
speed trany.

In most cases the casual observer isn't going to know what mods were made 
anyway unless the owner tells him.   So how do you judge, "Character".   If 
the driver wants a 5 speed then thats the character he wants for his car.

If one wants to live with the low revving,  noisy character of the olden 
days so be it.

Its all about making these classics fit our own needs, desires, and  life 
styles.   If you want to live forever in the past, so be it.
