Jack, I looked through some of the US suppliers for specific screws..... like Moss, British Victoria Ltd, etc, and their prices seemed quite similar to those that you mentioned. --There may be some sources that are cheaper, in bulk or whatever, here, but I have only had need for small numbers of them, so I haven't minded paying the price for those supplied by catalog sources.
