Years ago I worked in shop that just did Brit cars.  Jag engines always came 
out using the brackets on the head bolts, but MGs, Healeys, Sunbeams, 
Triumphs, etc., all came out as you describe - with a chain fed under the 
rocker shaft - one at the front and one at the back.

I was always concerned about damaging the springs that locate the rocker 
arms, but it never did seem to affect them.

the weight is taken by the assembled shaft.  He much prefers to install the
engine and gearbox assembled together as a unit -
