It's not so much that the *distributor* needs manifold or ported, but the
application. A distributor will work with either, but give different
emissions results at idle. Correct set-up for running can be achieved with
either, but a ported setup may fail emissions. It is possible to run
without vacuum, but you will get poor cruising economy or pinking under
load.
