I know I sound stupid asking this, but....

When I opened up the external oil filter casing on the '49 3100 I
bought a few weeks back, guess what? No oil filter element!

I called Chevy Duty and gave them the dimensions of the filter casing.
They sent me Purolator L20051 ("replaces P51"), but something doesn't
seem right fit-wise.

The casing has a 5" diameter, but this filter element has a 3 15/16"
diameter. The barrel of my filter casing is about 9" (not counting 2"
of taper at the bottom) but the filter is 4 5/8" tall. The casing's
1/2" center tube matches the filter's.

So the dimensions of this filter don't match my filter casing, nor do
they match the dimensions of the filters as printed in the Chevy Duty
catalog.

Am I correct in assuming that Chevy Duty sent me the wrong filter
element? Or is it possible that someone swapped oil filter casings on
the truck? Or is this a correct element and I'm missing something
obvious here?

Thanks....jay duncanson
