I did this once with a 4x4 (wood not truck) cut down to fit in the
cyllinder, which I then hit with the sledgie. The wood kept the cyllinder
walls from being marred. As Grant says, it does break the piston skirts. I
thought it was pretty extreme, but I was out of other ideas.
Now, having the benefit of middle age, and perhaps, middling wisdom, I think
I'd be much more patient and follow the wd40 in the top with lighter tapping
(still using a wood block) for three weeks, or however long it took.
Pounding with a sledgie can't be good for the cyllinder.
