Joe and John both have listed some great things to look for/at
when your car is running hot. But both have overlooked one of
the most obvious. How dirty/oil covered/greasy is your engine?
With any engine, but especially a 4 cylinder, there is a lot
of cooliing done through the block itself. If your engine is
dirty, greasy or oily, this acts as a great insulator, and
traps the heat in the engine. I have found that when my engines
start to run hotter than normal, I grab a can of engine
degreaser and clean the it. This will also make it a lot
nicer to work on it as well. :)
