Douglas, I also have tried teh push rod when teh slave was out and it moves all 
so easily and then stopped. Just as if it was not connected. So I suspect the 
release mechanism somewhere. I am prepared to pull the transmission as I don't 
see any alternative. Any idea what the transmission with O/D and bellhousing 
etc. weighs?

Alan, it's not clear whether you think you're getting the full range of
motion from the slave pushrod.  It may be that the problem is inside the
bell housing instead.
