While similar they are not quite the same design.  Most Mikuni's and
Keihin's (if similar to those used on motorcycles) have a couple of
advantages.  They have a true idle circuit, pilot jets and easily
exchangeable main jets.  All of which add up to a more tunable carburetor.
A jetting change is as close as your local motorcycle shop.

you can change piston springs, you can change damper oils, you can change
float height.  All the same things you can change on a SU, a Mikuni or a
Keihin.  As for the SU being low tech, it's the same design as the Mikuni's
or Keihin's you admire, with all the same adjustments, principles and
operations.
