Rope trick works wonders.  You lock the engine up with some rope stuffed into a
cylinder that has the piston at the  bottom of the stroke, and the valves 
closed.
Easiest to do it with all the spark plugs removed so the engine rolls over
freely.  Then you use the breaker bar and lean on it.  I would not recommend a
half inch breaker,  but a 3/4 inch instead.
