I have a 76 as well and it only works when the headlights/parking lights are
on. There is some type of switch in the map light itself that turns it off
when it is folded up and away.

I am trying to make some sense of the mangled wiring in my newly
acquired 76 1500 and have a question about the map light. My wiring
diagram shows it should be connected with the master light switch (it's
currently wired to the radio!); does this mean that the map light will
be shining whenever my lights are on or does it have some sort of on/off
device on it that I have been unable to figure out?

It's always those little things that bug me the most! Thanks in advance
for help.
