Yeah, now they're screaming that R-134a is a
greenhouse gas, even though its GWP (Global Warming
Potential) was originally said to be an order of
magnitude lower than anything ever made.

Regarding DuPonts motivation, it was no doubt
financial, but R-12 was being produced cheaply by
AlliedSignal as Genetron 12 and someone else (Dow?) as
Dynamatron 12.  Don't know about the patent thing. 
Might be true.
