The main problem is that the filler neck is not flush with the top of the

other way. Any suggestions out there?

There is an easily removed fuel level sender in the center of the rear of the
Spitfire fuel tank. The circular wedge ring is rotated by using gentle blows on
a screw driver with a LFH ("little" standard hammer) the sender will come out
easily although may be adhered to the gasket. New gaskets are available from
TRF. With this removed, you gave a good 2 inch hole into the tank that is
nearly flush with one the tank sides so you can "coax" the debris out easily.
This hole is where you should pour the "slushing compound" (tank sealer). The
acid wash should be ok, but check with the instructions for the slushing
compound for compatibility and tank preparation.
