Jerry,

Sounds like it might be the crankshaft thrust washers.  If these wear 
and fall out you tend to get an excessive amount of crankshaft end 
play.  This directly affects the clutch performance.  Try taking a 
large screw driver and place it between the harmonic dampner and the 
timing chain cover.  Try to move the dampner forward and backward.  
You should not get very much movement at all.  If you do, then the 
washers need replacing.  This is just one theory, but I have seen 
this on a few cars with the same type of problem you are experiencing.
