Hello there,

One thing you may want to rule out is a `thump' caused by your exhaust
pipe or muffler hitting something. When you change gears, your whole
engine / trans can move a bit on their (rubber) mounts in response to
the torque & driveline stress. What if one of THOSE mounts is broken ?
The excessive engine movement can send a sort of whip-lash down your ex-
haust lines, also rubber-mounted, and it could be enough to cause the
thump you hear in the diff area, and turn out to be unrelated to any actual
diff or other driveline problem.

My old '69 Spitsmoke had me going with a similar problem 20 yrs ago, turned
out to be nothing more than a broken rubber (!) muffler hanger just behind
the diff.

Good luck,
Tom Tweed
