My '57 smallmouth TR-3 and '63 TR3-B each had "flat bottom pan" style seats
when I bought them in 1965. The seat bottom upholstery was on a flat piece
(plywood?) that just dropped into a flat-bottom pan, maybe 3/4" deep.

I fondly remember the 3-B as having this feature, because the day after I
bought the car I removed the seat bottoms to do a thorough cleaning and found
$45.00 cash under the passenger seat!!
