Jordan,

One inch of slack sounds like the reason for your clutch problems.  Total
travel on a properly working clutch can't be much more than an inch.
When I did a clutch replacement in the Mazda van this spring, I had the 
same problem - couldn't shift into gears until after I adjusted the clutch.

Spec for the TR4 clutch is 0.1" of freeplay between the pushrod and
the slave piston.  You set this clearance as Ed described below.  The
fork (gearbox arm) should be held away from the slave cylinder when
making this adjustment.  Essentially, 0.1" of slack before the slave
starts pushing the throwout up against the spring in the pressure plate.
