Mike I've got you beat:

I once bought a complete MGB body shell from a local high school teacher
only to find out after it was on the hook that he didn't own it!  I put my
gullibility down to left over respect for authority from my school days
(that's cured now).

I ended up locking it in my garage 'til the rightful owner sorted it out and
bought it back off me.
