Phil

I teach a workshop on digital graphics (scanning, cameras, photo retouching). A
couple of points:

 1. Resolution - you will see ads for "MegaPixel". A 1.3 MegaPixel camera
means 1280x960 resolution (multiply the numbers and round off to 1.3
magapixel). Depending on optic quality a 2+ MegaPixel is in the ballpark
qualtiy wise to a 35mm. The problem is printing them. You need a 1440 dpi
printer with special paper to approximate a 5x7 color print.

2. More expensive cameras have optical zoom lens, like a normal 35mm camera.
Digitals also have digital zoom with or without optical zoom.

3. You can always crop out what you want with simple software that often comes
with cameras. In effect, you are getting the digital zoon AFTER the fact by
cropping in.

4 On the low end I would recommend an Olympus 340R. Been out several years.
Comes with 8Mb flash memory card. Gives 120 photos in low resolution mode and
about 30 in higher res. Can get extra flash cards that hold literally hundreds
of pix. Have seen this model for sale at $248-299.

5 Shop around. Check: cnet.com, microwarehouse.com, cdw.net
These site will get you good comparison pricing. Also some reviews of
cameras. Cheapest places to buy is online. Generally traditional photo stores
are not the best, especially price wise, most "not on the cutting edge".

Cheers, Barry
