What coil are you using?
if it has less than 1.5 ohm resistance it should be used
with a ballast resistor. Otherwise you're
pushing nearly 9 amps through the points.
(13.5V/1.5ohms)=9amps (15V/1.5ohms)=10 amps
This much current can melt the points when they get that hot.
Plus your points life will be greatly reduced.
With no ballast in your ignition wiring to the coil,
you should have greater than 3 ohms coil resistance
(13/3)=4.3 amps (15/3)5 amps
It also says a lot about the quality of the point sets
avail. today. I remember that little plastic piece
use to be Bakelite or another harder molded insulating
material that couldn't/wouldn't melt so easily.
