Brad,

I can only guess why the valve are higher... but recession is
probably the answer.

When you rebuild the head use SS valves, hardened seats and
bronze valve guides and have the valve guides cut to accept the
modern Teflon seals. The intake valves are the most needy... but
you can do all the valves.  In the states the machinists use a
stock Chevy or Ford Teflon seal and custom cut the TR bronze
guide to accept the seal.  There are many seal choices... ask
your machinist.  These will keep the oil from passing into the
combustion chamber as in today's modern engines.
