In the engine compartment, where the lever sticks up from the rod that
crosses the engine from the pedal (on LHD cars), there is a hole in the
front edge of the lever, about 1/2 way up.  There is also a small tab of
metal on the bulkhead, right where it changes from sloping towards the
front to slopin towards the back, but on the flat side that faces the
engine.  The return spring runs between these two points.  All of my 3As
have been that way, but the 56 TR3 I had for awhile was missing the
tab.  I always assumed it was just broken off, but perhaps earlier cars
were different.
