It's perhaps worth clarifying that you can't simply use exhaust guides from
the later TR4/4A, the holes that the guides fit into are larger in the
earlier heads.

However, the conversion guides (for fitting 5/16" valves to 3/8" heads) are
available both in phosphor (or is it manganese) bronze, and in cast iron.
Opinion seems to be somewhat divided whether the bronze guides are actually
better on the street, they do have to be reamed after installation and to a
larger diameter than the cast iron ones (which usually don't have to be
reamed).
