The solid spacer (in my opinion anyway) provides a more stable preload as
the bearing wears and is a bit more precise if done correctly.
The main advantage of the collapsible system is cost and ease of assembly. 
It is much quicker (read cheaper) to assemble and set up than the old shim
type
