FWIW, the starter I got from TRF came with a nice rubber boot over the
battery terminal.

I agree.  Since I didn't like running the starter current through the
(probably tired) original solenoid (as some hookups do), I wired the starter
directly to the battery (by putting both heavy cables on the same post of
the original solenoid) and used the original solenoid to supply power only
to the new solenoid on the starter.

This also avoids running the current for the new solenoid through the
original start pushbutton on my TR3A.  The new solenoid draws a lot more
current than the old, so I was worried about the pushbutton not being able
to handle the current.
