Perhaps I'm overly paranoid, but I wouldn't use tape in this application if
you have an overdrive.  Without OD is probably OK since there aren't any
little passages to plug up, but the OD mainshaft does have some little
passages in it.

Any plumbing supply (Home Depot, etc.) will sell you Teflon dope that cannot
form strings to plug things up.
