It's getting worse. I've been seeing a few web elements of late that
generate a normal-looking window with the normal closing "X" in the
corner. However the X is not the closing icon, but a link. Very tricky.
So, when an unwanted window pops up, having been unitentially invoked by
you or having bypassed all the normal popup blockers, you should
consider using the task manager to close the application. Don't even
press the X.

And as Bob said, don't EVER press any button inside the window. Even if
the window says something like "Do you wish to install" and shows a Yes
and No button, the No button may do anything except cancel the process.
Just close the application from Task Manager and you are a great deal
less likely to invoke some unknown program.

We got one with a slightly different twist to it. My wife got an email
from
someone asking why she hasn't sent the auction item that he paid her for
and
to click on an "eBay" link to view the dispute. At first I thought her
account had been hijacked but then realized it was the wrong email
address.
We do a fair amount of selling on eBay but don't use the address that
this
Phishing email was sent to. I'm sure that by following the "eBay" link
we
would have been asked to log in and they would have captured our info.
My
policy is to never click on a link in an email. These crooks are getting
very creative.
