Connect a timing light, a vacuum gauge and a source of vacuum (like a MityVac).
Let the engine idle, and watch the movement of the timing mark under the light,
as you apply vacuum to the module.  You can carry this to any level you choose,
but if it moves at all, chances are that the unit is fine.

Also check that the module does not leak vacuum.
