Listers,

First the update.

Had a good day at the shop today. The oil pump, timing gears & chain,
and dizzy/oil pump drive shaft all look good.
I've got the sump, front plate, rocker cover and timing cover all
soaking up in parts cleaner as I type this message.

The block, head, con rods and crankshaft were all recently magnafluxed
at my machine shop and checked out OK: no cracks and true. Knowing that
these major parts were just fine allowed me to proceed with the rebuild
in confidence. I had the crank ground to .010 undersize and then
ordered, and recently received, many boxes of engine parts from BPNW and
Moss. My visit to the shop today allowed me to inspect many ancillary
parts to determine what I need for them as well. I suspect many more
orders for parts will be made in the future. This week I will take new
camshaft bearings and all rotating parts to the machine shop. The
camshaft bearing will be placed into the block, and the rotating parts
will be balanced.

Now the questions.

1. I ordered a replacement set of liners, piston and rings from Moss.
Specifically I ordered the 87mm liners, which came with Grant 86mm
rings. Is this correct? It seems so to me. If the liners have an
inside diameter slightly larger than the piston outside diameter, then
the rings take up the space, forming the airtight seal between them.
Having never done this before, I feel motivated to get this right the
first time. I will place the rings on the piston, then place the piston
in the liner. The piston should travel in the liner with some friction,
but not too much. Can someone please point me to a source that
discusses the principle of this liner/piston/rings system? I need to
get an idea of how tight is too tight?

2. The car had copper Fo8 gaskets when I took it apart. The Moss kit
shipped with steel. Which is best? Seems like the answer would depend
on whether I need to easily compress them or not. Copper would be good
if my liners were too proud of the block, steel if not?

3. What the hell is Wellseal? I know it is a "jointing compound", but I
don't know what that means exactly. Many books mention this stuff to
use to put on the Fo8 gaskets themselves and adjoining mating surfaces,
as well as a substance to soak the rear bearing felts strips. Is this
some kind of gasket sealer like blue hylomar or silicon? Or is it
something different altogether? What is the equivalent at the local
parts shop?

4. Does anyone have an engine assembly lube they favor and recommend?

5. I recently read a post that mentioned that none of the usual
suppliers sell a rear oil seal mandrel with the accurate dimension. Who
does? I am going to need one soon.

6. Should I use Glyptol inside the crankcase? Inside the water jacket?

Peace be with you!
