[TR] A-type overdrive

Is there a way of checking the operation of an A-type overdrive with the
engine and gearbox out of the car?  I have heard so many horror stories
about what happens when the car is stuck in overdrive, I am nervous about
firing up the engine and putting it in gear.  This is a non-synchro A-type,
operational in 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  Thanks!
