Whatever you do don't force it. Those splines on the shaft have to line up with the sun wheel. Try rotating the shaft into each of the thee spine positions (I think there are three, its been a while

Hey Paul, I don't think that panel is screwed in place. May be just at the top. If it is screwed on the sides, Which I kinda remember doing myself, then it is screwed on the under side of the carpet.
