The first thing I would do is to patch all rust, straighten dents, weld cracks, etc. before it's blasted. There will be plenty more to fix after it's primed even though you think you got everything.

I used Felpro from Patrick's on mine and it was put in dry and developed a minor coolant seepage once it reached operating temp. He did recommend a gasket sealer when I talked to him after the fact.

If you have decent pressure at cold startup and low to nonexistent at idle once warmed up these are symptoms of bad bearings. The noise could either be the cause of poor pressure or the result of it.
