Mark this day gang, I paid my first $4.02/gallon for gasoline (the cheapest stuff) today in San Diego, CA and it took $56.00 to fill up my Toyota Tacoma 6-cylinder good gas mileage. My wife paid $40.

This is just like the gas "shortage" in the 70's. As people turned to smaller cars the manufacturers accommodated their demand. When gas prices went down, people changed and the big cars came back.
