IMO there should be no "rattle". A tiny amount of what I would call "whine" is normal, but not rattle. Actual chain wear can be gauged to some extent by turning the crankshaft backwards and observin

Just a WAG, but I'd guess that meant your timing chain &or sprockets were in bad shape too. That would allow the cam & ignition timing to vary more as the chain whipped around. Randall == This list
