FItz,

If the condensor conducts any current, while waiting for the points to open,
then it's bad. Condensors block DC voltage and pass AC voltage. Basicly
the ignition works using collapsing magnetic fields. When the points are
closed current flows thru the primary of the coil building a magnetic field.
Then the points open causing current flow to stop. The field collapses,
this collapsing field causes a voltage to be developed in the secondary (the
plug side) which has many times the number of turns of wire as the primary.
THis means the 12 volts gets stepped up to the 15->20Kv for the spark.
while all this is happening there is also a voltage generated in the
primary, the condensor absorbs that voltage. When the current flow from the
collapsing field stops the condensor discharges back thru the coil, building
a magnetic field, which then collaspses, etc. etc. etc. Finally there is to
little to develop any thing real and the signal is damped out.

The signal to the plugs is really a series of very fast pulses. The value
of the condensor is designed to damp the system as fast as possible. This
is why the condensor is specific to the coil being used.

the condenser in the system keeps the points from arcing open it servers
as
a path for the voltage to go until the points are open
in the past i have found that the are ether good or bad usually shorted to
ground in which case you would have no voltage present at the points and a
very warm coil
sound correct?
so iam assuming that the condenser is not the problem
to eliminate distributor cap and the whole system working back wards is the
easiest way

just pull the wire from the center of the dist cap and hook it to a NEW
spark plug and lay it on the valve cover
take the negative wire from the coil and with the key ON tap it very fast on
the engine you are simulating the points opening and closing if the is no
spark
ohm your coil out post to post and then neg post to center connection or
swap
it out if you have a other around
