If you take this approach, be sure to get a "line conditioner" power strip,
not just a "transient voltage surge suppressor". A surge suppressor deals
with serious "spikes" on the AC voltage sine wave. A Line conditioner
"smooths" a crappy AC wave into a decent sine wave. I'm not sure, but I
think many of the popularly priced UPS's are available with surge
suppression. Again I'm not sure, but as I recall some level of line
conditioning is an integral feature of the way most UPS's are designed. You
can check the box or check specs on mfgr's web sites.
