Did the avant have Audi's ESP system? (Which does independent wheel braking,
and is meant to be really good in the snow/crappy road conditions, but I
haven't had a chance to test it yet).

I think its only on newer (>2000?) models though. Its somewhat similar to
the porsche system.

On my 1997 BMW 328i traction control makes the car extremely stable in the
rain, but interferes with the throttle too much on corner exit.  I got a
ride Sunday in an A4 Avant Quattro, which has no traction control switch,
so I didn't have a chance to test the BMW at this event.  I would have
tried one run with it on, at least.
