    Perhaps a unified or standardized rating scale needs to be
    developed. Any ideas out there in SOL land?

The best equation, I think, is:

    LBCQ = ( Grins / mile ) * ( Grease / knuckle )

This should work for all levels of British cars from the most
disreputable rusted-out hulk of an 850 Mini (in which the
second ratio would presumably have a value approaching infinity)
to a pristine, immaculately restored Series I E Type roadster
(in which a comparable value would be obtained for the first).
A value of zero on either side of the multiplication operator,
however, results in a zero value for the quotient, which is
as it should be; ink stains from your Mont Blanc pen as you
sign a large check over to the restoration shop are not the
same as grease stains, even if the latter are just from twiddling
the dashpots or inspecting fluid levels.
