William Hartwell Woodruff is apparently trying to change a Smiths
tachometer from a 4 banger so it works accurately with a six. There is a
way to get a much better tach without losing the original look on your
instrument panel. It costs, but it was the way I went with the Lotus
(whose Smiths tachometer read 8,000 RPM sitting in my basement).

APT Speedo Specialists

will modernize your tach for $135. What this guy does is take your Smiths
tachometer apart, clean and repaint everything that needs it, remove all
the inaccurate voltmeter stuff and put in a brand new movement and modern
electronic circuitry that actually counts the pulses. Tell him how many
cylinders you want it for. He will calibrate it in the shop to be very
accurate (something that cannot be done with a Smiths, as it relies on the
resistance in the ignition circuit for it's accuracy). When he is done,
the whole thing looks like a new original unit and is better inside than
stock.

The only downside is the price. And the fact that your speedometer looks
a bit shabby by comparison...
