Many thanks to all of you who responded to my question about old gas/petrol.
Very helpful comments, and support. The vast majority feel that old fuel is
not a significant factor in non-starting.
fyi, all the recommendations about starting fluid don't work with my
updraught carb's location, and as spark is by magneto, the coil, condenser
and distributor suggestions are good, but not applicable.
Update:
Saturday - clean pilot and main jets; replace 50 pilot with 55 pilot; add
new gas to float camber. Not a cough, nothing. Remove plugs and heat in oven
to 450F; squirt starting fluid into plug holes; replace plugs and starts
unevenly but immediately. Turn engine off after 5 mins; restarts immediately
& easily; wait 3 hours; still warm & starts easily. 3 mile drive, running as
well and smoothly as ever; no hesitation and nice steady idle. I'm happy!
Sunday - getting ready to go to British Car Show in Lake Worth. 65F/17C;
refuses to fire even once; clean jets; still nothing; turn air mixture to
richest; still nothing. I'm not happy! Any ideas?
