You might get lucky, I did once. As a teenager we'd race our cars at the 
local racetrack on the quarter-mile. One night a week, anyone could 
challenge anyone else to a race. I peeled out in my '56 Chevy and when I 
went to shift into 2nd gear the carb linkage broke and the engine went 
past redline before I could shut it down.

When I popped the hood I saw the alternator pulley had sprayed out all 
the metal tines flat out extended (the jagged metal pieces on the pulley 
that provide airflow into the alternator). The fanbelt also 
disintegrated. Other than that, my 327 engine survived.
